Our History

RAUSI began as “The Alberta Military Institute” on 14 May 1920. On 21 May 1947 it became “The Alberta United Services Institute,” and finally, the prefix “Royal” was added by royal granting on 31 October 1975. Since 1920 the Institute has been housed at the Mewata Armoury in Calgary, sharing the Officers’ Mess with the various units stationed in Calgary.

Over the years RAUSI has provided funds for Reserves, Bursaries, Cadet Corps, upgrading the Mess facility, and Veterans groups, including the Poppy Fund Veterans’ Food Bank and the Colonel Belcher Care Facility, and The Military Museums. In addition, RAUSI has assisted with special commemorative services, and provides a library, together with the University of Calgary, now housed at The Military Museums.

Our Vision

RAUSI is a Canadian-based think tank inviting global civilian, humanitarian, military and policing communities to influence ideas and perspectives on emerging trends in global and regional security and defence.

Our Mission

RAUSI aims to cultivate networks of influencers in global civil society to research, publish and discuss issues in 21st century security and defence, with a view to influence and inform public debate.

Our Mandate

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thought on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence.

RAUSI is a venue for early movers to introduce research in evolving issues.

RAUSI will publish original content, curate extant articles, and sponsor speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence.

RAUSI views security and defence as two inter-dependent models in civil society. Security comprises outcomes of policy and practice in national, international and transnational governance of, e.g., socio-political issues, energy, trade, environment, human rights. Defence comprises measures to protect these outcomes. Both models are practiced at the individual state and the collective (e.g., UN, NATO) level.

RAUSI offers a platform for all early movers in timely delivery of research into under-explored security and defence issues that may yield future impact on the international order. This platform will enhance the recognized standing of researchers and enrich their domain expertise in the civilian, humanitarian, military, police and political disciplines shaping security and mitigating threats thereto.

RAUSI and contributors can blend opportunity and preparedness in sharing evidence-based research into the calculus of applied technology, physical and social sciences yielding that impact.
