Has a new character of war yet been revealed in the fighting? On 22 June, join MGen Chip Chapman, CB (Ret'd) as he explores these and other issues arising from the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Special Operations Training Concludes in Malaysia

May 30, 2023 - A small detachment from the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) recently returned from deployment in Malaysia, where it was supporting Operation MANTIS.

This was the latest edition in a series that has been conducted in coordination with Global Affairs Canada annually since 2014, helping to contribute to security in the Indo Pacific region.

The operation sees skilled members from the Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU) working alongside the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), helping to strengthen their ability to respond to Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear (CBRN) threats.

Could Canada Take a Lesson from Warsaw?

A wind-swept pier at a naval port in Gdynia, Poland was the scene last December of an extraordinary display — one that Canada's defence community looks upon today with envy.

Lined up track-to-track on the pier that day, their gun barrels elevated, were two-dozen Thunder K9-A1 self-propelled howitzers manufactured in South Korea. Nearby, 10 Black Panther K2 54-tonne main battle tanks were parked.

The armoured vehicles and big guns represented the vanguard of a $13 billion US blockbuster defence agreement between Warsaw and Seoul.

The Future of Domestic Operations

22 June 2023 - 1000hrs EST

In September 2022, the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona once again highlighted the vulnerability of Canadian communities to climate change. Other recent events such as the covid-19 pandemic have also underscored the needs of provinces and territories for emergency assistance. During these critical moments, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are often called in as reinforcements.

About RAUSI

Royal Alberta United Services Institute (RAUSI)

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thought on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence.

Formed in 1920 as a think tank, RAUSI later evolved into a service organization for veterans in the decades following the World Wars. In this new era, RAUSI has evolved back into a think tank, publishing original content, curating extant articles, and sponsoring speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence.
