UK Arms Diplomacy and International Law on the Black Sea

By LJ Howard, 30 January, 2024‍

Ukraine’s grain shipments are in danger due to Russia’s use of mining shipping routes in the Black Sea. After the failure of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July 2023, Ukraine and Romania created a safe lane through their nearby seas. The UK offered old minehunters to help, but Türkiye, using a treaty called Montreux Convention, stopped them from passing through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus Strait. Although it seemed like Türkiye was blocking the UK's arms diplomacy, Türkiye’s denial actually led to broader diplomatic success.

Systemic Evolution of States in the International Order

By LJ Howard, 1 February, 2024‍

An overview of the historical evolution of states in the international order, tracing back to the Peace of Westphalia in the mid-1600s. It highlights the role of international disputes, conference diplomacy, and politics in shaping international treaty law, and emphasizes the significance of interstate conference diplomacy in the development of treaty laws, noting that such diplomatic efforts yield more sustainable outcomes for statehood compared to armed conflict.

Call for Directors

The Board of Directors of RAUSI is now warmly welcoming interest from any Member who may wish to put his or her name forward as a Director for the coming year.

Directors are intended to be more working directors alongside their peers rather than those just offering visionary leadership and strategic guidance.

An interest and/or experience in communications and/or mass marketing in social/online media would be most welcomed, as would an interest/experience in overviewing  and supervising the work currently being done by our consulting paralegal in corporate secretarial matters.

Please contact me at 403-282-3347 or president@rausi.ca should you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you by mid-February. Should you know of others who are not (yet) members but may be interested in this matter, please network this message out to them.

Thanks very much.

About RAUSI

Royal Alberta United Services Institute (RAUSI)

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thoughts on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence.

Formed in 1920 as a think tank, RAUSI later evolved into a service organization for veterans in the decades following the World Wars. In this new era, RAUSI has evolved back into a think tank, publishing original content, curating extant articles, and sponsoring speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence.
