Why Russia still has friends on the world stage
Alexander Hill, Professor of Military History, University of Calgary |
|
Russian president Vladimir Putin’s recent visits to both North Korea and Vietnam received significant attention in the western media. So, too, did a recent visit by Russian warships to Cuba. Before the outbreak of the full-blown war in Ukraine in February 2022, such visits would have likely received much less attention. Now, they come amid western attempts to isolate Russia on the world stage. However, it seems these efforts have had little effect in undermining many of Russia’s international relationships.

I'm an army reservist and a nurse. I learned to keep the first job a secret |
|
I'm an army reservist. That means I'm a part-time soldier for the Canadian Armed Forces, who train constantly and volunteer to serve when there is a need to fight wildfires or deploy to a war zone. I'm proud to be in the army and believe it's a force for good. But I've learned to keep this aspect of my identity under wraps because some people grow distant or sometimes become antagonistic and even rudely suggest I must have a taste for violence — just because I'm a soldier.

100 Years of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) |
|
Canada’s Royal Canadian Air Force is celebrating its Centennial this year. For decades, Calgary and area has played host to thousands of Air Force personnel at six different locations. Hear where it all started: about our first military airplane; the heroes and the scoundrels that founded, shaped and grew this great national institution; and how for decades it was a huge part of Calgary’s community. Presented in Partnership with Chinook Country Historical Society, a Chapter of the Historical Society of Alberta.

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thoughts on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence. Formed in 1920 as a think tank, RAUSI later evolved into a service organization for veterans in the decades following the World Wars. In this new era, RAUSI has evolved back into a think tank, publishing original content, curating extant articles, and sponsoring speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence. |
