Canadian warship shadowed Chinese vessel off Alaska last month, National Defence says |
|
A Chinese polar research vessel was shadowed by a Canadian warship in the Bering Strait off Alaska a few weeks ago, the Department of National Defence (DND) belatedly acknowledged Wednesday.
In a statement issued to multiple media organizations, the department said that the frigate HMCS Regina, which has since returned to its home port of Esquimalt, B.C., encountered the research vessel Xue Long (Snow Dragon) 2 as it transited the strait.

Canada’s purchase of Inuvik hangar applauded by northerners and Arctic security experts |
|
The Canadian government has purchased a strategically located aircraft hangar in Inuvik, N.W.T., for $8.6 million — a move that's being met with relief by northerners and experts on Arctic security who were alarmed by foreign interest in the facility.
The 21,000-square-foot hangar, which went up for sale two years ago, was previously leased by the Department of National Defence, a long-standing arrangement that ended in 2021 when the department cancelled its lease. The government reportedly came under pressure (new window) from the U.S. to buy the facility after it went up for sale, because of apparent Russian and Chinese interest in the site.

I buried my memories of serving in Afghanistan. 15 years later, I found peace unexpectedly |
|
I left a part of myself in Afghanistan during my deployment as a Canadian soldier. That's why it hurt so much to see everything fall to the Taliban again after the coalition forces pulled out in 2021.
I was 18 when I joined the Canadian Armed Forces and deployed soon after. My tour started in February 2008, during the low fighting season. The level of violence dropped annually in the spring when nearly every available hand was harvesting the opium crop to pay for the year's expenses, including ammunition. |

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thoughts on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence. Formed in 1920 as a think tank, RAUSI later evolved into a service organization for veterans in the decades following the World Wars. In this new era, RAUSI has evolved back into a think tank, publishing original content, curating extant articles, and sponsoring speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence. |
