Message from the President

Maj Mark Soehner, CD (Ret'd) President, The Royal Alberta United Service Insitute (RAUSI)
Greetings, and welcome to spring 2021. In this, my last Dispatches note to you as president, I’d like to briefly highlight the plan that RAUSI is following to become more relevant to its members and the community at large. Dispatches continues to be RAUSI’s regular deliverable of research, background information as well as local regional and national news concerning defence and security matters in Canada. RAUSI’s continuous social media campaigns on Twitter and Facebook supplement Dispatches, and both intend to broaden the global demographic of viewers of Dispatches and followers of the RAUSI website. These initiatives, together with Bruce Henwood’s editing the quarterly Newsletter and a now digital and more robust RAUSI Annual Report reflect RAUIS’s ambition to rebrand itself as a credible source of useful information and research. In effect, RAUSI is an aspiring think tank. Issues deserving debate are many and wide ranging – freedom of navigation and territorial jurisdiction in in the Arctic region, cyber warfare and espionage, the role of international law and diplomacy in dispute settlement, the use of artificial intelligence, drones, technological advances in weapons systems, disinformation campaigns, not to mention institutionalized sexual harassment and lack of veterans’ welfare. Dispatches will only become as useful as readers find it, and so feedback from readers on how useful they find or want to find Dispatches is essential. As such, and on behalf of the directors who are putting in a fair amount of time and effort to rebrand RAUSI as a 21st century model, I am asking you to write and comment on the product, good or bad. Pending a survey, any comments you offer, however brief, will provide useful guidance. Please write a quick note to me or any director at admin@rausi.ca. Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing you at 1900 hours on 22 April 2021 at the Zoom Annual General Meeting. Invitations with the link will be sent out shortly.

---|
This note is the first in a series that diagnoses the conditions for success of one of the means currently (2021) being employed to settle an international maritime dispute in the Asia Pacific region. The note’s intent is to determine if and how such measures can successfully apply to other maritime disputes, such as those in the Arctic region.
