Message from the President
It is now twenty years after the attack on the World Trade Centre of 9/11. The United States have withdrawn from Afghanistan and the Taliban have resumed power.  Many Canadians, including countless veterans, are questioning the value of the Afghanistan war and all of its costs to Canada. As an institute that encourages and promotes the Arts, Sciences and Literature related to Canada’s Defence and Security Community, RAUSI will continue to provide timely information for the purposes of discussion and education. One perspective relating to this war is to recognize that for eleven years, Afghanistan saw the world come to its aid. There were efforts to protect the undefended, empower women, and educate children. The Afghans experienced unprecedented security and value for their lives and culture that will not soon be forgotten by the women and youth. It is a distinct probability that these seeds of an optimistic future will grow to ultimately steer the country away from oppression through efforts of their own. When that time comes, Canadians will then be able to once again commemorate the actions of those who initiated the beginning of change by way of military support and foreign aid. I challenge all our members and website followers to continue to learn from our history, express informed opinions and identify relevant Defence and Security Community articles/presentations to promote critical thinking and debate. Maj Kent Griffiths, MMM, CD (Retired) President The Royal Alberta United Services Insitute (RAUSI) president@rausi.ca |

Joint Statement on NORAD Modernization Canada and the United States recently issued a joint Statement on NORAD modernization intended to guide collaborative efforts over the coming years. This multi-year effort will work to modernize, improve, and better integrate the capabilities required for NORAD to maintain persistent awareness and understanding of potential threats to North America in the aerospace and maritime domains, to deter acts of aggression against North America, to respond to aerospace threats quickly and decisively when required, and to provide maritime warning consistent with the NORAD Agreement. |
