Message from the President

As we enter the new year, COVID continues to impact our lives.

In response to the direction from Jody Thomas,  Deputy Minister of National Defence and General Wayne Eyre, CDS, the Defence Team has adopted measures consistent with the CDS/DM Summer 2021 Posture to address the COVID-19 Omicron variant which will restrict official international travel,  cancel any in-person, workplace holiday events and activities; return to a work-from-home posture; minimize social gatherings; and avoid personal travel for CAF/DND members. At this time The Military Museums are not restricting access to the facility and all those who wish to work on site, including volunteers, may do so.

As almost all New Years Levees were cancelled, in Alberta Lieutenant Governor Lakhani put a new twist on the New Year’s Day Levee, offering members of the public the opportunity to take part in a modified, outdoor event. The traditional levee, which normally takes place inside Government House, was not held this year out of an abundance of caution due to the pandemic and the continued monitoring of variants of concern. “While we are not having the traditional indoor event this year, I am still very much looking forward to this opportunity to greet people and share best wishes,” said Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani. “Our province can be so beautiful in the winter, and I hope that everyone will enjoy starting their New Year with a short chat and some holiday treats in the fresh air.” The outdoor levee was held on Saturday, January 1, 2022, and Lieutenant Governor Lakhani and Dr. Zaheer Lakhani met visitors at the front steps of Government House in Edmonton.

It is the collective hope from your RAUSI Board of Directors, that 2022 will be a better year and the COVID restrictions will lessen.

International Law and State Practice in Geopolitics; Part I

Membership & Bylaws

Dynamic energies and the strong desire to continue The Royal Alberta United Services Institute into and beyond our 102nd year of operations continues to run strong in this organization. Programs and communications are ramping up for 2022 yet despite recent increases in operational costs, for this next year our membership dues were voted to remain as is.

The value proposition of membership is not difficult to explain, the closure of access to DND facilities has been impactful on all of us. Despite this, on your behalf we continued with the Queen Elizabeth II and the Don Freeman Bursaries, with presentations to follow. This program has been continuing since 1954 and assists young Canadians in continuing studies in strategic issues that affect us all.

Understanding the fiscal realities of Cadet Corps operations, on your behalf we subsidized three (3) Corps in October, with our continuing commitment to supporting young Albertans expanding their understanding and knowledge of our historic military contributions to our Country.

Unfortunately our membership numbers are dwindling, in part by the passages of time and in part by the new realities of pandemic restrictions. With our evolution to electronic content delivery, podcasts and social media platforms, such as the Lunch and Learn presentation held on 10 December 2021, we are conscious of the need to break bread together.

To that end we are in planning stages for a formal dinner with some extraordinary guests of honour. Standby for details to be confirmed.
