1 – Volunteered for second term; nomination approved by current Board 2 – Director with current Board completing 2-year term 3 – Director with current Board volunteering for new 2-year term 4 – New member of RAUSI CommentsThe Nominating Committee received one nomination for each of the positions of President and Vice President. The current President has offered to stay a second year. The other nomination is a current Board member who is now standing for Vice President. Three Directors finished one year of their two-year term (one of whom is now standing for Vice President). Six candidates have been nominated for the open Director positions to complete the eight Director positions to be filled. Of the six, four candidates have been members in good standing of RAUSI for more than one year and have worked with or served on the current Board. The fifth candidate is a member who has volunteered to stand as a director, and is a retired CAF Brigadier-General with post-release volunteer and academic experience. The sixth candidate is a member who has volunteered to serve as a director in the appointment of Secretary, and is a retired CAF Lieutenant-Colonel with post-release volunteer experience. Notwithstanding the Bylaws requiring a member-wide hard copy ballot be taken for the purposes of choosing from a more competitive field, it is recommended that the above Board be accepted by the Members as given. If any Member takes exception to this, you are asked to make this known, in confidence, to the Acting Secretary Deanna Manson (secretary@rausi.ca). If 5% (equivalent to an AGM quorum) of the membership rejects this approach, an election will be conducted by mail in ballot. |

On April 30, 2024, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Director Lisa White and Assistant Director Deanna Manson, a prospective RAUSI Board Member, attended the True Patriot Love Foundation Captain Nichola Goddard Women in Leadership Series in Calgary, AB. A forum for the sharing of ideas between the military and corporate worlds, it featured a moderated panel discussion with Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and Veterans discussing their experience as women leaders. The event was also a networking opportunity for like-minded individuals and supporters. Assistant Director Deanna Manson is an RCAF veteran of 28 years, former United Nations employee, and currently manages an immigration enforcement program line at CBSA. Having dedicated her professional life to the public service and the safety and security of Canadians, Deanna was proud to attend this function and hear from women leaders in the CAF and the Veterans community. |

EU Strategic Communications to Support Sanctions Against Russia
|
|
Diplomacy and strategic communications are key to making sanctions effective. Tackling the challenge of sanctions circumvention requires the cooperation of non-sanctioning (or third) countries, and sanctions diplomacy plays an important role in persuading them to cooperate. This paper offers a data-driven analysis of the EU’s strategic communications on sanctions against Russia, showing that the EU relies mostly on addressing interests (such as EU accession and economic interests) and framing support for sanctions as economically or politically desirable for third countries. To a lesser degree, values also play a role in the EU’s outreach, mostly in relation to protecting the principles of international law. This is in line with EU foreign policy’s broader shift to focusing more on interests. |

RAUSI is a Canadian-based forum for global civilians, humanitarian, military and international police communities to present original thoughts on trending issues, in their formative stages, as they relate to global security and defence. Formed in 1920 as a think tank, RAUSI later evolved into a service organization for veterans in the decades following the World Wars. In this new era, RAUSI has evolved back into a think tank, publishing original content, curating extant articles, and sponsoring speaker’s symposia which amplify cross-disciplined models of 21st century security and defence. |
