At the Royal Alberta United Services Institute (RAUSI), we're a Canadian-based hub for discussing emerging global security and defence issues. We began as a think tank in 1920, shifted gears to support veterans after the World Wars, and now we're back to being a think tank. We publish original content, curate articles, and host speaker symposiums to explore the complex landscape of 21st-century security and defence.

Join us as we navigate this ever-changing terrain.

The Battle in the Bog: The Canadian Corps at Passchendaele - Names in the Landscape, In Search of Canadian Missing Soldiers

On Thursday 7 April, Dr Tim Cook and Simon Augustyn will give a lecture on the role of the Canadian Corps at Passchendaele (and region).

The lecture starts with a presentation by Tim Cook, one of Canada's leading military historians and author of twelve military history books.  He will highlight the role of the Canadians in the Battle of Passchendaele in October and November 1917.  While providing insight into the human toll of the battle, he also discusses the Canadian advance through an indescribable crater landscape filled with mud and unburied bodies.

Afterwards Simon Augustyn, project officer at the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, will give a presentation on the new project 'Names in the landscape'.  With this project MMP1917 want to assign as many as possible of the 6,928 Canadians who are on the Menin Gate to an initial burial or death place.  During his presentation Simon will explain how one fifth of all the 'missing' Canadians can be given a place in the landscape again.

Date:   Thursday 7 April at 19:15 Belgium / 11:15 Mountain
